The Season Of Mists…

So the autumn equinox has finally arrived and we are now nearly into October. As we have said many times before, the autumnal months are our favourite time of the year and are arguably the best part of the year to visit the South Downs. As a dog-friendly holiday cottage in the South Downs National Park, this is the ideal time to visit as the landscape is stunningly beautiful, especially so in the autumn mist.

If you’re looking to do something in connection with harvest time, then the Rathfinny Wine Estate are conducting harvest tours from September and into October. They are also hosting a harvest time dinner on Sat 17 October but tickets are limited so check the website.

In other news, the much-loved Village Store is undergoing some changes and will be closing for a short period time after Bev, who has run Alfriston’s iconic little shop for twenty years, is retiring. We will all be sad to see her go as she has been an ever cheerful, and vital, presence in the village.

The store will be closed until the 9th October, and then reopen in temporary form with a side entrance until the 9th November, when the main entrance should be functional again. The grand reopening is scheduled for the 4th December, which will be very exciting indeed.

Did you know that the village store is less than one minute’s walk away from Flint Cottage, making it the most convenient of convenience stores.

As an East Sussex holiday cottage that sits very near Charleston Farmhouse, one of our favourite things to do at this time of year is to visit the gardens and witness the late flowerings that are still visible to the eye, though you’ll have to be quick. If you miss them then the creepers that bust into colour on the exterior walls of the house are something to behold.
